Even though I have been tying ropes in a Western fashion for many years, it wasn’t until a year ago that shibari, an Eastern style, came into my life. Although shibari is stunning, I thought it was just for aesthetics. The most fascinating thing to me is that both suffering and journeying are prominently displayed in a shibari class. While I’m no expert, I think this is best shown in suspension sequences. These include many transitions from one pose or another. The subject tied is fluid and stable in this manner. Each transition is an individual journey. It requires you to suffer extreme physical discomfort, overcome mental limitations like “I cannot handle this,” and eventually find comfort in the discomfort. This is why I believe that shibari provides a rich inner journey. It’s a great way to connect with others. Kino gracefully endures his sequential suspension experience. He is incredibly strong. Kino is suspended by a single futomomo, which is one leg folded over. This is a very intense situation, made more intense by the ropes running across his legs. It is brutal! Please forgive my messy, dangling cords. I’m not even close to being able to keep the ropes clean as I go. I want to get better.
